The Berliner Ensemble (BE), located in Berlin-Mitte, is one of the best-known and most respected theatre institutions of the German capital. It was founded in 1949 by the German playwright, librettist and lyricist Bertolt Brecht and his wife Helene Weigel. It gained its reputation especially through showing Brecht’s own plays. In its 125 years old history, the Berliner Ensemble has always had a critical look at socially relevant issues and questions. Until today the theatre does follow this fashion, which is particularly typical for Brecht’s plays.
