The Worriment Waltz
The Worriment Waltz is a Performance-Installation conceived in the pandemic era that aims to propose an alternate reality which could possibly become our future. It emphasizes the loss of human connectivity, art and freedom. The Worriment Waltz is an installation that was developed during the COVID-lock down era, but still relevant today. Given the current social and economic circumstances of the world, it highlights a changing world.
The evolution of technology and especially the use of social media has completely changed the very essence of how we live our lives and interact. There is a barrier between the person and the experience as it first goes through a technological medium. But this does not only affect our present, it is now affecting our past, which will also determine the course of the future. With the rise of political correctness (specifically “woke culture), we are literally erasing people, censoring art, condemning the past into oblivion, and the very evolution of how we got here. Placing a band-aid and removing anything we disagree with is not a solution, it is a tragedy. We have a shocking past, unstable present and doubtful future. Furthermore, social media has created a need for people to “be the art” and therefore art has got lost in the frenzy of it all. Finally, the economic crisis further puts these issues on the sidelines as people are struggling to make ends meet, war and sickness are breaking out and revolutions are happening. While we deal with surviving, a quintessential part of humanity is disappearing before our eyes.
Therefore, my performance installation aims to create an encounter in a post-pandemic future where we have lost all that we crave as humans: Vibrancy, connectivity, art and history. While it is important to remain optimistic and find new ways of connectivity and our celebration of humanity, I find as humans we take things for granted and use our progress to further drive us apart.
