A picture of Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, captures Prince Tamino's heart. But Sarastro has her in captivity. Tamino and his companion Papageno set out to free Pamina from Sarastro's temple on behalf of the Queen. But once they get there, it becomes unclear who is good and who is bad. The only thing that stands out is Pamina's shared love for Tamino.

The most enigmatic opera written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, it unites the opposing worlds of popular Viennese theater and the philosophical drama of the Enlightenment. The central concept of Yuval Sharon's production is a collage akin to Mozart's music, which alternates between the forms of popular theatre, singspiel, and opera seria. Mimi Lien's set and Walter Van Beirendonck's inventive costumes were nominated for the London Design Museum's Beazley Designs of the Year 2019 for their work on the production. Heinrich von Kleist admired the lost natural grace of man in the Viennese machine comedy and marionette theater, which Sharon also examines. A child's imagination is the driving force behind Sharon's method.

In German language with German and English surtitles.
