Taco Hemingway

Taco Hemingway – born Filip Szcześniak – brought about a bona fide revolution in Polish hip-hop, lending a voice to the bourgeois precariat that avoided the scene earlier on and spearheading the genre's mainstreaming in the country. After early MF Doom-inspired English-language releases as Foodvillain, he rose to fame with the debut EP Trójkąt warszawski (2014), chronicling the love triangle of three Warsaw twenty-somethings playing out against the backdrop of an observant portrait of the city's nightlife; his subsequent releases have edged between conscious and hedonistic, embracing pop rap bangers yet winking at posher sensibilities. Despite initially being regarded as an outsider, Szczęśniak went on to collaborate with some of the eminent figures of the Polish hip-hop scene – including Quebonafide, Pezet and Mata – as well as pop stars Dawid Podsiadło, Rosalie and Artur Rojek. His most recent release is 2023's * 1-800-OŚWIECENIE*, a concept album exploring his signature themes of consumerism, big-city lifestyles and autofiction.
