Sweet Country / Warwick Thornton / Australia 2017 / 110 min. – Northern Australia in the 1920s is the setting for this dramatic story of Sam, an aboriginal cattle breeder who kills Harry, a white station owner in self defense. He and his pregnant wife must therefore leave their home and go on the run. They set out across the beautiful but rugged landscape into the interior of the country. Hot on the heels is sergeant Fletcher, who is obsessed with catching Sam and trying to take him to court for the murder. The whole group pursuing Sam also includes local landowners as well as Fred (Sam Neill) and indigenous tracker Archie (Gibson John). But Sam knows the bush better than anyone else.… This is a story about a painful chapter in Australia’s history, when racism was openly expressed by white settlers and indigenous people had no rights in their own country.
