Sudan Archives

As Sudan Archives, Brittney Parks has combined R&B, hip-hop and experimental electronic music with hypnotic string loops and African sounds. All of these sounds could be heard on EPs and her debut album Athena (2019) released on the cult label Stones Throw. After Parks moved to Los Angeles to study music technology, she began producing beats on a tablet with the addition of her vocals and strings, which were increasingly inspired by her immersion in Sudanese music. She transitioned from her early, avant-garde compositions to her "stunning, reflective" (Pitchfork) debut album. In 2022, she returned with the categorisation-resisting LP Natural Brown Prom Queen, which received excellent reviews for its imaginative production and sensual vocal performances.
