Stodoła

Stodoła is one of the longest active music clubs in Warsaw. Its history dates back to the 1950s, when dance and cabaret evenings began to be organised in a former wooden canteen used by the builders of the Palace of Culture and Science, which gave rise to Stodoła – the Central Students' Club of the Warsaw University of Technology. It opened in 1956 and, after changing its venue four times, finally settled permanently in a new building on Batory Street in 1972. It is now the venue for many of the biggest club concerts in the city, both by artists from the Polish scene and international stars, and it is virtually impossible to list all those who have played at this cult venue.

Stodoła is now associated almost exclusively with music, and probably most of all with rock and punk – but this was not always the case. In the early days, the most important musical place in the club was occupied by jazz – the first few editions of the "Jazz Jamboree" International Jazz Music Festival took place here – and cabaret, which was a natural outlet for later theatre activities. The Stodola was the venue for all of Tadeusz Kantor's performances, as well as for a pantomime group and the Warsaw Theatre Group. Film also found its place here, in the form of two film clubs and later the Student Film Centre, which made several dozen short films between 1973 and 1977. Since the 1980s, the club has come to be associated primarily with guitar music, largely due to Room 06, a rehearsal space for the band Perfect, which formed at the club, as well as for Kult, Maanam, Voo Voo, Oddział Zamknięty or Wilki. Some of these projects are impossible to imagine on any other Warsaw stage than Stodoła.
