The Stickman is a contemporary circus performance by Darragh McLoughlin, featuring a Man, a Stick and a TV. A man and a stick lie on stage. A large flat-screen TV flickers in the background. The TV reads MAN / STICK, as if to dispel any doubts about what is right in front of us. This is not a story. There is no narrative. But over time Man and Stick go through the forms together and a certain independence emerges. All the time the TV tells you what to see. People don't like being told what to see all the time, but how can they see anything different now. Stickman is a metanarrative in which the artist plays with the concept of meaning through language and semiotics. The performer employs mechanics that create cognitive dissonance as surprising ideas appear side by side. The aim of the performance is to 'play causality with the audience', which takes the audience to surprising places.
