Scala Cinema
University Cinema Scala is a venue with a century-long history of cinematic tradition. The latest era of the cinema is created by Masaryk University and Aeropolis, who together provide a continuous programme of film productions all year long. Masaryk University uses the cinema mainly for professional activities, while Aeropolis provides evening screenings for the public.
As in its early days, Scala continues to be a first-run cinema. In addition to classic film productions, it offers a wide range of non-film programming – live broadcasts from opera and drama stages, lectures, festivals or concerts. University Cinema Scala serves students, academics as well as the general public. Big hall has a capacity of 475 seats. The projection booth houses both, a 35 mm projector for classic filmstrip projection and a Barco DP4K-19B projector for digital projection in 4K quality, following DCI requirements. The auditorium is equipped with 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus sound. The equipment also includes a subtitle projection device. The Cafe bar has a capacity of 55 seats, and uses projection in HD quality with stereo sound.
The creative Studio Scala is attached to University Cinema Scala and offers programmes and workshops for all ages.The wide range of animation, film, sound and art workshops for schools and the public can be found on Studio Scala website. In the summer months, Scala organises Scala Summer Cinema in cooperation with The Moravian Gallery in Brno. Open-air screenings take place in the unique space of the courtyard in Governor's Palace.
Note by the editor: From 1. 7. 2023, the main cinema hall of the Scala cinema will be closed for a structural survey. Visitors can visit two summer scenes – Scala's summer theatres: Janáček and Filda. Screenings are also still taking place in the cinema café and it is possible to visit the open foyer. In summer mode also continues the bar and garden on Moravské náměstí..
