Ruprecht von Kaufmann + František Skála: Dreamscapes

The exhibition named "Dreamscapes", introducing the creations of German painter Ruprecht von Kaufmann and Czech visual artist František Skála.

Ruprecht von Kaufmann is one of the most important figurative painters in Germany today. In his dynamic art, he focuses on bridging the gap of modernism to fuse old with new. In his paintings he sets up open ended narratives, that are supposed to entangle the viewer in the world of the painting. He finds that there are experiences that all humans share, that are universal, but at the same time very personal. Those interest him. His art operates in the visual interstices of play and reality, between the imaginary and the real. In von Kaufmann’s painting practice there are sudden moments of transition, not merely in terms of an evolving subject matter but also in his diverse uses of materials. He discovered a specific type of linoleum that has become his favoured surface.

František Skála, Czech sculptor, painter, children's book illustrator, musician, performer, designer and dancer, ranks amongst the most original contemporary artists. In his art, he focuses on using randomly found objects, fragments, natural and non-artistic materials and creates a world of fantastic imagination, full of miracles, myths, and landscapes. With a mixture of humour and graveness, he lifts the colour, shape and material qualities of these objects and their unexpected combinations and inserts human utilitarian products into new contexts. His work is a constant challenge: “It is absolutely necessary; it is of vital importance to keep exploring the useless yet creative manifestations of life. Not to examine what things mean but to explore what it is they wish to say…”

The patronage of the exhibition was taken over by Andreas Künne, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Czech Republic. The exhibition has been made possible by financial support from the Czech Ministry of Culture.
