Rakim is a classic. One of the few MC's in hip-hop history to single-handedly change the course of an entire genre, and echoes of his work can still be heard in contemporary rap today. A New York-based MC, one half of one of the most important rapper/producer duos in hip-hop history, namely Eric B. & Rakim, turned the definition of rap upside down in the second half of the 1980s. When other MC's were still closer to nursery rhymes, Rakim's verses brought about a real revolution. Rakim transformed hip-hop, defined the term flow and pioneered the use of rhymes, and is rightly called the founder of a new school of rap, which at the time still had nothing to do with trap beats and auto-tuning. And whether we're talking about the output of Big Daddy Kane, 2Pac, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne or A$AP Rocky, none of them would be putting their verses together like this if it wasn't for Rakim.

Each of his albums recorded in partnership with Erik B, Paid in Full, Follow the Leader, Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em and Don't Sweat the Technique, as well as his solo longplays The 18th Letter, The Master and The Seventh Seal still sound impressive and embarrassing to a huge proportion of the current scene. Paid in Full was voted the best hip-hop album of all time by MTV, while Rakim himself came 4th on MTV's list of the best MCs of all time. Steve Huey of AllMusic stated that "Rakim is almost universally acknowledged as one of the greatest MCs - perhaps the greatest - of all time in the hip hop community". The editors of About.com ranked him second on their list of the '50 Best MCs of Our Time (1987-2007)'. In 2012, The Source ranked him number one on their list of "50 Best Songwriters of All Time".

Interestingly, Rakim was a revolutionary not only in terms of rhyme writing and rapping. His style, with its big chains and logos, emphasised the dirty, backyard vibe of the 90s. Rappers such as Kool G Rap, Raekwon, Nas and 2Pac picked up from Rakim not only a number of patents on how to write rhymes, but also how to carry themselves on the big-city streets. This will be Rakim's first and probably last visit to our country.
