Rakim
One of the few MC's in hip-hop history to single-handedly change the course of an entire genre, and echoes of his work can still be heard in contemporary rap today. A New York-based MC, one half of one of the most important rapper/producer duos in hip-hop history, namely Eric B. & Rakim, turned the definition of rap upside down in the second half of the 1980s. Rakim transformed hip-hop, defined the term flow and pioneered the use of rhymes, and is rightly called the founder of a new school of rap. Rakim is also credited with creating the overall shift from the more simplistic old school flows to more complex flows.
