To live happy lives, we have to ignore the hordes of unhappy people. We have to hide them from our eyes, otherwise the pain would slay us. Two sides of a fence. A summer house and a hovel. They live right next to us: the barbarians. They didn’t have to walk thousands of miles. Or are WE the barbarians? It’s all a matter of perspective. The Hungarian author and director Árpád Schilling, winner of the Stanislavsky Prize and Premio Europa, is the founder of the legendary independent theatre Krétakör and his works have been presented at theatres like Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and the Vienna Burgtheater. He has been declared an enemy of the state by the Hungarian government. Since the beginning of this season, the artist and his family live in Paris.
