Zdeněk Fibich wrote seven operas including the most important ones, The Bride of Messina and Šárka. The first one marks the start of the author's operatic work. In collaboration with aesthete Otakar Hostinský, he decided to compose music for the world-famous drama by Friedrich Schiller from 1803, The Bride of Messina, which Schiller conceived as an Antic tragedy. Fibich's opera was first presented at the National Theatre in Prague on 28 March 1884 and depicts a truly tragic destiny of the empress of Messina, Donna Isabella, and her children, sons Manuel and César and daughter Beatrice who shall, based on a prophecy like in an antic tragedy, become the downfall of her two brothers. Fibich and Hostinský created a great tragic opera, which is unique in the Czech operatic literature.
