The Father is a poignant tragifarse written by Florian Zeller, probably the most often produced contemporary French playwright. The play is directed by Iwona Kempa, best known for her Ingmar Bergman adaptations.
André (Marian Opania) seems to hold up well. However, his loved ones are concerned about his increasingly frequent memory problems. Anna (Magdalena Schejbal) tries to provide her father with the best possible care, hoping that this will slow down the progression of his illness. But it's not memory loss that seems to be the older man's biggest problem. The real drama is the progressive complication of family ties, the drama of mutual understanding. Who will act with integrity in these circumstances, and who will exploit misfortune? And whose world is truer—that of the sick father or that of the seemingly healthy family?
