PLATO – městská galerie současného umění

PLATO is a contemporary art gallery in Ostrava, which provides facilities for all those who want to understand the contemporary world in a broader context. It reflects its complexity and richness through art – in an international context and at the highest possible level.

It operates in the city centre in the former listed city slaughterhouse from the late 19th century. Its transformation has been shortlisted as one of the five finalists for the European Architecture Prize Mies van der Rohe 2024. The exhibition spaces in a total of five halls cover an area of 1370 m². The architectural design allows six walls to be rotated, opening up the building from all sides. There is also a café and a library.

The gallery includes an open-air garden that surrounds the building on both sides (to be established in autumn 2022). The Garden of Presence, as PLATO has named it, is permacultural, meaning ecological, ethical and meaningfully arranged for both humans and animals. PLATO will develop it gradually over the years.

In addition to exhibitions, PLATO organizes lectures, programs for children and schools or creative residencies. It places special emphasis on issues of feminism, ecology and social justice, and art in the context of other disciplines.
