Cancelled: There's Something in the Water

There's Something in the Water / Ian Daniel, Ellen Page / Canada 2019 / 72 min. – Canadian actress Ellen Page sets out on a trip through her native province of Nova Scotia. The main trigger for the journey and making this film was the eponymous book by Ingrid Waldron, which draws attention to a new phenomenon: environmental racism. From outside, Canada often appears to be a vast country with pristine nature and an open society not dealing with the same problems as its large neighbour to the south. But close to, this image of an ideal country disintegrates because of ongoing racism and a colonial heritage that affects the ethnic minorities in this multicultural country. Rather than bringing greater solidarity, the current environmental crisis is highlighting old inequalities even more as the consequences of environmental pollution impact the indigenous peoples first. Alongside several women from First Nations communities, Ellen Page observes them as they battle for their own rights and for a more just future for their children.
