Screening of „Happy Face_”directed by Alexandre Franchi as part of the New Cinematic Movies series during Octopus Film Festival 2019.
Stan, a nineteen-year-old caring for a sick mother, decides to create a special mask for herself and join the support group for people with facial deformities to better understand her mother’s problems and establish a better relationship with her. Although individual Happy Faces can suggest a cinema of exploitation, Alexandre Franchi’s film is in fact an empathic drama that tells an amazing story about the terror of beauty and its greatest victims – people who radically distance themselves from the dominant canons. In Happy Face there is no make-up – the heroes were actually played by people who suffered from chronic diseases or suffered various types of accidents. Happy Face, despite the ironic title, shows their desires and problems in a way that is empathic and intelligent, thanks to which Franchi’s film is painfully real.
