Now or Never

Screening of short films is a part of “Echoes of festival Mezipatra Queer Film Festival 2019”.

Politics isn't the monster in the closet any more. It has pervaded every human activity and become a normal part of our days. But we don't choose the times we are born in. We face systems that cannot predict our desires and that create boxes we cannot fit into. As the protagonists of this block demonstrate, it's time to stand up and let the world know we're here.

  • The Foreigner / Ben Allen / United Kingdom 2019 / 12 min. – A pessimistic vision of a post-Brexit reality. Amidst the European chaos, the UK has leaned towards extreme conservatism, which no longer has mercy for certain citizens. Turkey suddenly looks like the promised land, and Graham hopes he'll finally be able to start anew there. But what if the price is too high?

  • Tomorrow Island / Gwenn Joyaux / Estonia, United Kingdom, Portugal 2018 / 17 min. – At the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet telegraphist Sveta makes a seemingly desperate attempt. When she receives an order that closes the borders in an unprecedented way and divides the world in half, she decides to use her skills in reading code to save the love that started burning somewhere in the frost on the opposite sides of the barricade.

  • Prisoner of Society / Rati Tsiteladze / Georgia 2018 / 16 min. – What to do when you get into isolation? Day and night, you have to stay in your room because nowhere is safe. Neither society nor your family understands you. This intimate film paints a portrait of a young Georgian trans girl who tries to deal with her situation and show at least to her parents that she's not a confused boy, but their daughter.

  • Under The Dress / Aleksandr M. Vinogradov / Russia, Belgium 2019 / 24 min. – The director Aleksandr Vinogradov's grandma was his childhood ally. In her house, he could dress as a woman, explore his desires and sexual identity and look within himself for what was forbidden to others. This film is a specific self-portrait, combining the director's childhood memories and his present in the context of the oppressive political system in Russia.

  • We’re All In This Together / Logan Mucha / Australia 2018 / 17 min. – Just like all over the world, the queer community in Australia hasn't always been visible, let alone one that enjoys equal rights. We're All in This Together is an important reminder of the fights the older generations have had to wage, with their accounts being brought to life through monologues of young people participating in a casting.
