James’ workshop will explore embodied strategies for collective contemplation and meditation that have emerged in his dance practice. In a relaxed and patient atmosphere, the workshop will probe the small bubbles of space around the body (the Kinesphere) through improvisations that expand the spectrum of sensory possibilities, particularly at the slower, softer, smaller end. A range of different approaches to touch, gaze and attention will hopefully reinvigorate the potential of the small gesture, by going even smaller and creating a new palette of micro-detailed movement opportunities. These scores will hopefully feel liberating and expansive, with a focus on creating shared moments of subtly and intimacy.

James Batchelor: A Choreographer and Performer from Australia. His work is known for its visual clarity, architectural sensitivity to space and rhythmic playfulness. James’ movement is hypnotically focused and detailed drawing audiences into a contemplative and imaginative realm. His practice is collaborative, spanning mediums of dance, film, music and sculpture. With a particular interest in using movement as a tool for inquiry, he was part of a two-month expedition at sea studying remote Antarctic islands in 2016. His work Deepspace has travelled widely in Europe to contexts such as Centre Pompidou (Paris) and Tanz im August (Berlin). He was part of the Aerowaves program in 2019 touring to over 16 countries with his solo Hyperspace. James has an established teaching practice, working with people of varying ages, access needs and experience with movement. More informations about James can be found here.
