The 8th Vinyla Music Awards will take place in Lucerna Music Bar in 2019.
The Vinyla Music Awards were created in 2011 to name and appreciate important pieces of contemporary Czech music. While other disciplines have earned dignified and respected awards (Jindřich Chalupecký Award, Magnesia Letter, Alfréd Radok Prizes, …), the music scene lacked a universal platform. The Vinylo prizes therefore try to fill this vacuum. Above all, however, they aim to contribute to the popularization of music, which, despite its indisputable benefits to domestic culture, is often at the edge of the media and its listeners' interest.
The Album of the Year will be chosen from the following albums:
- Lines of Life: Light
- Ohře River: Produce Ohře
- Tomáš Palucha: Čaro
Discovery of the Year:
- White boy
- Lines of Life
Achievement of the year:
- Activities Wrong
- Activities of the BCAA system
- SOUND activities
This year’s Vinyl is full of representative pieces from the domestic music scene. In the category “Album of the Year”are all experienced musicians. Jan Boroš, in his intimate debut, Stínítko, took advantage of his experience from the no longer active group Fiordmoss. Behind Ohře River, who scored their “Czech cowboy”on the eponymous album, there are five seasoned musicians from Climatizado, Happiness, Esgmeq and Esazles. The strong composition of psychedelic rock on his album Caro offers a quartet by Tomáš Palucha, who was still a duo for Vinyla two years ago.
“All the nominated musicians have similar chances and represent the best I met at clubs and festival stages in the Czech Republic this year. At the same time, I am delighted with the great genre scattering of selected artists,” says one of the co-ordinators of the event, Pavel Uretšlégr.
Another formidable presence in clubs and festivals this year is Market, whose ambitious mix of art-rock, indie and pop on the album Art Star contuinues to bring in more and more fans. From the BCAA platform, White Boy utilizes post-club music to unite fatty beats, Japanese anime and space synthesizer riffs. These two names, along with Lines of Life, have nominations for “Discovery the Year”.
The BCAA platform has also found a hit in the “Achievement of the Year” category; it has been successful in shifting the boundaries of club music towards visual activism. However, other nominees, teams of promoters, DJs and artists who work under the Wrong brand, are also emerging from the club scene for their work popularizing “dirty” techno. The third nomination was provided by the organizers of SOUND’s activities; independent platforms supporting education, creative dialogue, and implementation of electronic music and audio art projects.
The winners of Vinyla 2018 will be decided by a 23-member jury during voting in the second round. The winners will be announced on 13 February 2019 at the Lucerna Music Bar ceremony. Accompanied by Floexe and British producer Tom Hodge, they will perform songs from the current album A Portrait Of John Doe in a trio with Jakub Tengler and a virtual symphony orchestra. Full lines will also play Lines of Life. “The project of Jan Boroš has grown into a four-member ensemble, so the album Stínítko will be heard in more harsh arrangements. This will be a unique concert where Floexe and Tom Hodge will perform their joint album,” says Pavel Urešlegrgr, one of Vinyla’s Music Awards Coordinators. A self-confident mix of titles from the successful album Art Star has also been prepared for the evening by the Prague-based band Market. Traditionally, the annual vinyl of nominated projects will also be baptized in a limited LP series which includes one song from all of those nominated.
The evening will be accompanied by Petr Vizina.
