Orchestra Baobab

Orchestra Baobab is an internationally adored Senegalese band that holds a special place in the history of African music. Their story began in the 1960s, embracing a mix of diverse musical personalities and a unique blend of Afro-Latin styles, pop, West African griot music and nightclub atmospheres with rhythms that move people to dance.

The history of the Babobab Orchestra dates back to the golden era of African music, which was comparable to the era of the Beatles or Led Zeppelin in the Western world. Genre-wise, however, Baobab is completely unique – while the Beatles were influenced by American rock and roll, Latin American music played a similar catalytic role in Senegal. The group's style has matured into a sophisticated essence that fuses African roots with Afro-Cuban rhythms.

After the break-up, the original recordings became cult collectibles, with producer Nick Gold, who similarly initiated the creation of Buena Vista Social Club or Ali Farka Toure's collaboration with Ry Cooder, being responsible for the revival. Today, Orchestra Baobab is one of Africa's longest-running ensembles, and 2017's Tribute to Ndiouga Dieng marks its return in full force.
