Nicolas Bougaïeff

Nicolas Bougaïeff is a French-Canadian electronic music artist based in Berlin. His Cognitive Resonance 12" marked the 2017 relaunch of legendary British label NovaMute, followed by widely praised debut album Principles of Newspeak on his own label Denkfabrik. His most recent album Les Sauvageries combines contemporary classical with industrial techno. Bougaïeff played his debut gig at Berghain in April 2018.

His first forays into the dance music underground came amidst Quebec’s insular rave scene in the late 1990s. A thirst for a deeper understanding of music inspired Bougaïeff to take up electroacoustic composition studies at the Conservatoire in Montreal. A move to Berlin in 2008 provided a pivotal moment in Bougaïeff’s artistic development, his intrigue brought him far beyond days and nights of excess. Bougaïeff completed a doctorate on minimal techno at the University of Huddersfield and designed the controllers for Richie Hawtin's Plastikman Live tour.

Nicolas Bougaïeff is not only paying homage to the past, he’s spearheading the techno avant-garde. Whether performing live or as a DJ, Bougaïeff demonstrates a rare ability to wield delicate textures amidst the brutal and orchestral dimensions that underpin his sound. Finding inspiration in numerous science fiction novels, his recent productions explore relentless sonic portraits that alternate between paranoid dystopia and far future exhilaration.
