Lineup: Data Koroptev Erik Nyström Michela Pelusio: Space Time Helix James Ferraro

Michela Pelusio: SpaceTime Helix SpaceTime Helix is an audiovisual performance with a giant spinning standing wave in a white string, forming a large helicoid. The helix surface is bright and transparent, with waves running over it, disappearing into the future, more and more distant in space-time. This work explores helical symmetries and infinity, frequencies and geometry, elementary particles and quantum physics, sonic visions and perceptions. This work is a metaphor for the return to the root of things, and to the simplicity and the complexity of the macro and microcosmos, the internal and external space, the architecture of the mind and the architecture of nature.

James Ferraro's work is known for responding to life in the 21st century and for dealing with unique facets of our contemporary moment, such as post-9/11 consumerism and "hyperreality". Beyond his solo work, Ferraro has also been a member in a host of musical projects, from the band Bodyguard to the noise duo The Skaters. His 2011 release Far Side Virtual received mainstream recognition and was named Album of the Year by The Wire. Though Ferraro's albums are separate works, they are all unified by the overarching theme of the Anthropocene, with an emphasis on the relationship between human social evolution and the internet. He explores artificial environments, as well as new cultural, philosophical, social and economic realities spawned from today’s globally-connected world.

Erik Nyström is a UK-based Swedish composer and performer who operates in the areas of electroacoustic and computer music. His output comprises both improvised algorithmic music and acousmatic works and investigates posthuman conceptions of sound, spatial sound synthesis, texture, and visual and physical listening experiences. In his live performances, intelligent algorithms and cybernetic systems diffuse human agency into a synthetic ecology of sound.

Data Koroptev This new project commissioned by NEXT festival joins outstanding Slovak and Czech musicians Ondrej Zajac, Ondřej Ježek, and Václav Šafka (electric guitar, drum machines, objects and electronics). The music of Data Koroptev blends robotically carved rhythms with echoes of noise songwriting, woven throughout with carefully layered improvisation. The trio rally in a search for a unique musical language that does not shy from genre citations or the eclecticism of today’s liquid music world.
