National Competition 1

Screening of short films is a part of “16h Prague Short Film Festival”.

This year’s National Competition features eight short films made in 2020 with a running time of thirty minutes or less. Thematically, they address growing up, the search for and perception of oneself, or questions related to prejudice or social and cultural stereotypes.

The international jury for this competition section will present one award for best film, which comes with a financial prize of 2,000 Euros, plus one honorable mention. Viewers can choose their favorite in this section by voting online.

Kanya / Apoorva Satish / Czech Republic, India 2020 / 16 min. – A coming-of-age drama about an adolescent girl growing up between Western and traditional cultures and their different value systems. Her aspirations of becoming a competitive swimmer take an unexpected turn when she gets her first period.

Anatomy of a Czech afternoon / Adam Martinec / Czech Republic 2020 / 22 min. – Temperatures are rising and crowds of people crowd the shores of lakes every day like thirsty animals. Then the summer hits blasting from speakers are silenced by an announcement of two boys gone missing. We can either witness a tragedy or just lie in the shadows, feeling that it’s not our concern.

Inversion / Lucia Kajánková / Czech Republic 2021 / 22 min. – A film about the complicated friendship of three adolescent girls, two swimming pools, and one malicious act of revenge.

Along Came A Prince / Cristina Groșan / Romania, Czech Republic 2020 / 22 min – Over the course of a theatre workshop for youngsters, a teenager finds himself sexually intimate with a slightly older girl. But did he really mean to? Congratulated or blamed, everyone has a strong reaction.
