Rynek Underground

Walking between the Cloth Hall and St. Mary's Church, you may not realise that there is a real treasure trove of knowledge about Krakow's past hidden several metres underground. To discover it, it is enough to go down to th Rynek Underground. The tourist trail Tracing the European Identity of Krakow was opened here on 24 September 2010. The creation of this interactive exhibition was made possible by archaeological research which was carried out continuously from 2005 to 2010 in the eastern part of the Main Square. A wealth of traces of the centuries-old history of the site was uncovered. A unique archaeological reserve of nearly 4,000 m2 under the Market Square was thus created, providing an opportunity to admire the treasures found and to learn about the turbulent history of medieval Krakow.
