The suburbs of Rome are not what they seem. Neat little fences separate carefully manicured lawns, while filtering through the summer idyll are human frustrations of the blackest dye. Impossible to ignore and self-assured in its direction, the picture uses hyperbole to portray neurotic fathers, indifferent mothers, and childhoods that are far from innocent. This scathing vision of depraved humanity won Berlin’s Silver Bear for Best Screenplay.
