MILO Ensemble

For fifty years, Milo Kurtis has been one of the most colourful figures on the Polish improvised music, world music and free jazz scene. He was one of the first artists to present the rich world of world music to Polish audiences. In the mid-1970s, together with Marek Jackowski, he founded Maanam and played in the bands Osjan, Voo Voo and Israel. He played and recorded with world jazz stars: Tomasz Stańko, Don Cherry, Bob Stewart, Andy Shepard and Dave Douglas. The MILO Ensemble, which he leads, is made up of musicians from many continents, distilling inspiration from a variety of traditional music into world music-soaked jazz. Instruments used by the ensemble come from the Middle East, Africa, Mongolia or Indonesia, among others; influences from Eastern Mediterranean music, Polish traditional music, West Africa, Tibet and jazz can be found in their works.
