Loten Namling

Loten Namling is a Tibetan singer, musician and cartoonist, living in Switzerland and performing in many countries. Born in Indian exile in Dharamsala, his parents fled Tibet after the suppression of the 1959 anti-Chinese uprising and the departure of the 14th Dalai Lama. He has studied Tibetan classical court music and singing, traditional Tibetan opera ache lhamo, is proficient on the Tibetan damen lute, and performs these traditional genres as well as folk music from various regions of Tibet and his own songs. He founded the rock, and later pop-rock, band Porok Karpo, and enjoys experimenting and exploring the relationships and connections between songs and culture. As an activist for Tibetan rights, in 2013 he carried a black coffin with the inscription "Free Tibet" from Bern to Geneva on foot. Dodo Hunziker made a documentary about him, Tibetan Warrior (2015).
