Kool & The Gang
Kool & the Gang was formed in 1964 in New Jersey. They have won an enormous number of awards including two Grammy Awards and seven American Music Awards. During its tenure, it was inducted, as were its members, into numerous Halls of Fame and also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Founding members include brothers Robert "Kool" Bell and Ronald Bell aka "Khalis Bayyan". Also Dennis "Dee Tee" Thomas, Robert "Spike" Mickens, Charles Smith, George Brown, Sir Earl Toon, Woodrow "Woody" Sparrow and Ricky Westfield. The group changed its name several times. After settling on Kool & the Gang, they signed with De-Lite Records and released their debut album, Kool and the Gang (1969).
Their first mainstream success came with the release of their fourth album, Wild And Peaceful (1973), containing the singles Jungle Boogie and Hollywood Swinging, which reached the top ten of the charts. Between 1979 and 1986 they reached a second commercial peak after working with Brazilian musician and producer Eumir Deodato, along with the arrival of singer James "J.T." Taylor. Among their most successful albums of the time were Ladies Night (1979), Celebrite! (1980) and Emergency (1984), which sold two million copies in the US alone. Their hits from this period include Ladies Night, the US number one Celebration, Get Down On It, Joanna, Misled and Cherish.
Their discography includes 23 studio albums and nearly 70 singles. They have sold 7.5 million RIAA-certified albums and singles in the United States and 70 million records worldwide. The music of Kool & the Gang has been featured in famous films such as Pulp Fiction and Saturday Night Fever.
