About Julian Steckel

Julian Steckel, born in 1982, took his first cello lesson at the age of five with Ulrich Voss, who he studied with for the following ten years. Beside his studies he took part in masterclasses by Zara Nelsova, Frans Helmerson, Ralph Kirshbaum, David Geringas, Bernhard Greenhouse, Mstislav Rostropovich and Steven Isserlis.

He has won first prizes at national and international competitions including the International Domnick 'Cello Competition in Stuttgart, the International Witold Lutoslawski 'Cello Competition in Warsaw, the Prize of the German Music Competition and the Lions International 'Cello Competition. In 2003 he was awarded the “Landgraf-von-Hessen-Preis” of the Kronberg-Academy, in 2004 the “Top Cellists Prize” of the Verbier-Festival and the “StartUp Music” Prize of the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. Besides he won the second prize in the International Pablo Casals 'Cello Competition in Kronberg in August 2004.

As soloist he has appeared with such ensembles as the chamber orchestras of Zurich and Stuttgart and the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra Budapest, the Philharmonia Hungarica, the “Jeunesses Musicales World Youth Orchestra”, the Kremerata Baltica, the Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Solistes Européens de Luxembourg and the Radio Symphony Orchestras of Saarbrücken, Frankfurt, Berlin, Warsaw and Kopenhagen.

Performances have taken him to many countries in Europe, to Asia, Mexico, the USA and festivals like Musikfestspiele Mecklenburg- Vorpommern, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, the Kronberg 'Cello Festival, Oleg-Kagan-Festival, Beethoven-Festspiele Bonn, “Spannungen”- Festival Heimbach and others. He is appearing with musicians such as Sarah Chang, Christian Tetzlaff, Yuri Bashmet, Wolfram Christ, Tatjana Masurenko, Gustav Rivinius, Paul Rivinius, Alexander Lonquich, Lars Vogt, the Guarneri Quartet and the Vogler Quartet.
