It took ten years for the normalization regime to destroy a section that had managed to resist the superior forces of the totalitarian state in the cultural sphere. The jazz section was definitely one of the most significant cultural phenomena of the years 1975-1985. Its activities and existence were all the more remarkable because it tried to remain within the bounds of legality until the very end, exploiting all the loopholes in the normalization legal system. The story of the Jazz Section is not a great human story, but it is a story full of paradoxes, a story of how a group of stubborn and courageous people managed to resist the superior forces of the totalitarian state. Over the years, the section grew from a small interest group into a society with several thousand members and a wide range of activities in the fields of music, literature, theater, film, and the visual arts.
