The American composer James Tenney (1934-2006) combines minimalism, improvisation, computer music, microtonality, tape music, and more in his music. In other words, all the key approaches used by the avant-garde composers throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Tenney has worked with Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and many others. This event celebrates a composer who embraced diversity, broke barriers, and left a lasting mark on avant-garde music.
The Postal Pieces, which Tenney called "Scorecards", are a remarkable series of 11 works printed on postcards. Each card features a complete work to be performed by the instrumentalists. These pieces reflect to a large extent some of Tenney's primary compositional ideas. Each is a meditation of sorts on acoustics, form, and hyper-attention to a single gesture.
For this project, two international ensembles will join their efforts – Klang Systematiek and PMP, whose members include Gareth Davis, Dario Calderone, Elia Moretti, Roxana Hädler, and others. The Postal Pieces will have its Czech premiere at the concert at the Divadlo X10.
