Karlštejn is originally a hunting castle standing on the main European watershed of the Elbe and Danube rivers, in the style of Central European architecture of the late Baroque, with a three-winged castle pavilion and detached farm buildings, also referred to as Rococo. It was built between 1770 and 1775 by Filip Kinský together with a large deer park. In 1823, Karel Alexander Thurn-Taxis bought the chateau and in 1825 turned it into a hunting lodge. Later the castle was converted into a recreation centre.
