The City Art Gallery in Łódź is the oldest institution of culture under the local government in Łódź, which was created to promote modern art. Since 1951, the Gallery functioned as the Łódź Department of the Central Bureau of Artistic Exhibitions in Warsaw, and since 1962 as the Bureau of Artistic Exhibitions in Łódź. In early 1990s, the institution name was changed to the State Art Gallery in Łódź. However, in 1997 its original name “City Art Gallery in Łódź” was restored. The City Art Gallery in Łódź exhibits contemporary art of Polish and foreign artists in all fields: painting, graphics, drawing, sculpture, photography, tapestry, design, film, multimedia, performance. The Gallery is involved in educational and publishing activity.
