Sonia Szóstak: Fortune Teller Told Me

The first individual show of Sonia Szóstak in Warsaw.

The photographer will present a selection of her latest as well as earlier works. The leitmotiv of this exhibition are reflections on the female body seen through the prism of photography. Photographs with Małgorzata Beli were created especially for the exhibition in Leica 6x7 Gallery Warszawa. Moving between fashion, travel and portrait photography, Szóstak's photographs are a great affirmation of femininity. The photographer develops an independent artistic language rooted in the tradition of the great masters of painting and photography, drawing on the heritage of the classical portrait, but also fresh and captivatingly lyrical. In front of Sonia Szóstak's lens, women seen by a woman are treated subjectively, full of dignity and strength, just like Małgosia Bela in portraits created especially for the exhibition.

The main theme of Sonia Szóstak's work is the human body in nature. The photographer explores the possibilities of the body in motion, grasping them beyond time, and at the same time thoroughly contemporary. The charming protagonists of Szóstak's photographs are models and friends, captured in light dance poses. It is a photographic portrait of her generation immersed in dreams of what is unreal, elusive, beautiful. Szóstak's photographic practice sometimes approaches magical realism, each photograph seems to tell its own story. Photographs embedded in reality cross its borders, they are unreal. The artistry of photography allows Szóstak to move boldly between traditions and poets. Whether carefully arranged or photographed spontaneously, her photographs are immediately recognizable.
