George Grosz in Berlin

George Grosz (1893 to 1959) is considered to be one of the prominent politically-satirical artist of the Weimar Republic; three times Grosz was charged, because of insulting the Reichswehr, attacking the public moral and profanity. At the exhibition, his provoking art from old Berlin times will be presented in detail. However, Grosz' old and mostly unknown photographs will be thematised, showing his impressions during a crossing to America and in New York. A less known facette of the artist will additionally be presented with his work as costume and stage designer.

At the exhibition, over 200 works from Berlin museums, private collections, the Berlin art market and the Berlin based bequest will be seen, which are mostly not publicly accessible. Grosz, whose work would be unimaginable without the Revolution in 1918 and the confusion of the Weimar Republic, is being presented as one of the most important artists of the 1920s. His Berlin made works are a mirror of the political and social questions at that time. And even in his New York exile his mind would not let go of the political incidents coming from Berlin under National Socialist control.

In the retrospective, which was created in close collaboration with the George Grosz Estate, Grosz' well known works will be shown, as well as his rather unknown ones. Since the last big retrospective in Berlin, almost 25 years ago, the exhibition gives the opportunity to understand Grosz' artistic development and the distinguishing diversity in content and styles. What is art or satire allowed to do? What is political art and was Grosz in his time a political artist? These questions are pursued by the exhibition, which is also part of the Berlin theme winter 100 Years of Revolution: Berlin 1918/19. The exhibition shows the artistic potential of Grosz which is present in this city, also thinking about the possible location of a George Grosz Museum in Berlin.
