Etnographic Museum in Cracow

The Ethnographic Museum in Kraków is the holder of the oldest and largest ethnographic collection in Poland. It owes its establishment in 1911 to the efforts of Seweryn Udziela, a teacher, amateur ethnographer and collector of folk culture products. Since its foundation, the Museum has increased its collection to over 80,000 objects, presenting them at a permanent exhibition and numerous temporary ones. At the same time, it conducts research, publishing and educational activities. For several years now, it has strengthened in particular its field research into contemporary phenomena (allotment gardeners, family photography, contemporary weddings, new dimensions of craftsmanship) or exploring the resonance of historical collections (woodcuts, Siberian collection, Krakow costumes). It has also returned to the idea of the Krakow Workshops, initiated at the dawn of the 20th century, which inspires drawing on the resources of traditional culture in the design of utilitarian objects (ethnodesign). Finally, the Museum has launched new areas of cooperation with the public, addressing topics that are vital today.
