On the eve of the International Roma Day we offer a special celebratory concert featuring Taraf de Caliu from Romania and Ivan Herák & Band from the Czech Republic. Both ensembles will also appear during the evening concerts on 7 and 8 April 2019 in Dvořák Hall of the Rudofinum, each with some ten minutes’ performance. However, the special concert offers Czech music lovers the only opportunity to hear both groups in a longer musical programme.

Taraf de Caliu continues the tradition of the legendary Romani-Romanian band, Taraf de Haïdouks, which has performed in Tokio, Paris, Singapore, New York, London and Los Angeles. The musicians from the small town of Clejani, currently led by one of the founding members of Taraf de Haïdouks, its violinist Caliu, play traditional music from southern Romania, a repertoire that has helped make them one of the best-known Romani bands worldwide.

The outstanding Slovak-born violinist Ivan Herák is famous for his exquisite solos and capacity for improvisation. “His charismatic expression and a subtlety of tone contrasting with wild rhythms make him a unique artist.” He and his band play both virtuoso pieces and melancholy ballads, predominantly from Hungarian, Romanian and Slovak Romani folklore with some elements of European classical and Romantic music.

Programme: – Traditional and contemporary Romani music.
