Collegium 1704 – Sing unto the Lord
Programme: – Georg Philipp Telemann: Grand motet „Deus judicium tuum” TWV 7:7 – Georg Friedrich Händel: Chandos Anthem no. 2, „In the Lord I Put My Trust” HWV 247 – Johann Sebastian Bach: moteto „Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied” BWV 225 – Johann Sebastian Bach: moteto „Jesu, meine Freude” BWV 227
The tradition of cultivation of the motet reaches far back into the Middle Ages, and during the Baroque period, the choral motet was at its zenith primarily in the music of German and French composers. The programme, consisting of works by the three greatest German composers of the High Baroque, juxtaposes J. S. Bach’s achievement as the ultimate master of the art of the German motet, Telemann’s Grand motet in the French style, composed for the select company of the Parisian Concert Spirituel, and Händel’s masterpiece uniquely combining the Italian musical style with English traditions and the composer’s German roots.
