Bach’s St Matthew Passion is not only one of the pinnacles of German Baroque music, but also one of the supreme masterpieces of European music of all time. Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s legendary performance of the work in 1829 started the revival of interest in the music of the Leipzig Cantor. For nearly two centuries, this remarkable composition has been regarded as the most sublime example of perfect musical beauty.
