Church of St. Ignatius
The Church of St. Ignatius in Prague – New Town is a Roman Catholic branch church. It is located on the corner of Charles Square and Ječná Street in the Prague 2-Nové Město district. The early Baroque church building with a richly decorated facade and tower was built between 1665 and 1699 in several stages as part of the Jesuit college (today's VFN). In 1773, St. Ignatius Church was confiscated from the Jesuit order and became one of Prague's parish churches. It came back into the possession of the Jesuits in 1866.
In 1950 the church of St. Ignatius became part of the parish of St. Stephen. However, since 1990 the parish has been under the spiritual administration of the Jesuits and most of the activities of the parish take place in St. Ignatius Church or in the neighbouring Jesuit residence. Currently, the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola is owned by the City of Prague. The whole area of the former Jesuit college in New Town, including the Church of St. Ignatius, is protected as a cultural monument.
