In its first version the Carmen was framed in a form resembling that of a comic opera, with sung fragments interspersed with spoken parts. This fact, according to the custom of the time, barred its way to the stage of the Grand Opera of Paris, so the premiere had to be held at the Opéra Comique. The audience there tended to have a taste for light, amusing musical comedies, and did not like Bizet's tragic ending: this was one reason for the cool reception of Carmen. A more important reason for the initial reluctance of audiences and critics, however, was the bold novelty of the content. Bizet broke with the unwritten tradition of drawing the themes of operas from the world of myths and legends or from ancient historical periods and the lives of the so-called "upper classes". In place of the conventional characters, often full of artificial pathos, he brought to the opera stage living, contemporary people - soldiers, smugglers and cigar factory workers.
