Berlin electro-classical pioneers in full acoustic ensemble line-up will perform on November 1st 2020.
Daniel Brandt, Jon Brauer, and Paul Frick are classically-trained musicians from Berlin who have become known around the world for their groundbreaking experiments in both electronic and acoustic music. They came to prominence as a trio, showcasing their minimalist techno-influenced compositions, primarily in a club context. Their debut album, 2010’s You Make Me Real, was an intriguing marriage of traditional musicianship and 21st- century electronic and industrial aesthetics. Using piano, glockenspiel, drums, and electronica, they fashioned music that combined a dancefloor feel with a sense of organic, human musical interaction. The BBC has described their approach as concert hall compositions for the clubbing generation.
Brandt Brauer Frick’s subsequent expansion into a 10-piece live performance ensemble was a logical next step. The ensemble, which features piano, harp, trombone, tuba, violin, cello, harp, three percussionists, and a Moog synthesiser, brings their music to the stage almost entirely analogously and acoustically. The ensemble has performed both at major music festivals such as Glasonbury and Coachella, but also in classical concert halls like Konzerthaus in Vienna, Lincoln Center in New York, and the Southbank Centre in London. In addition, they continue to perform as a trio in techno clubs around the world. In blurring the boundaries between genres and bringing together elements of the traditional and the experimental, Brandt Brauer Frick encapsualte a philospohy shared by Strings of Autumn: it is entirely fitting that they should be part of the festival’s 2020 line-up.
