Black Boys / Sonia Lowman / USA 2020 / 90 min / English friendly – Many black boys grow up without a father, in an environment of poverty and stigmatisation, which prevents them from spreading their wings from an early age. When they grow up, they three times are more likely to end up behind bars or as victims of police shooting. Their children too grow up without a father, and the vicious cycle continues. Much of the blame lies with the prejudices that permeate key institutions, starting with kindergartens and schools. The film presents a vivid portrait of the experience with these institutions and, through personal stories and informed commentary, gives a voice to a wide range of people who know prejudice first-hand, from top athletes to teachers and students, to parents and children trying to break out of this vicious cycle.
