Big Brave
Hailing from Montreal, Big Brave was formed in 2012 by Robin Wattie (vocals, guitar), Mathieu Bernard Ball (guitar) and Louis-Alexandre Beauregard (drums). Initially they made minimalist folk music, but their sound quickly evolved into the slow, saturated compositions of experimental doom metal. Following Beauregard's departure in 2018, his place was taken by Tasy Hudson, the band's current drummer. Big Brave combines elements of traditional folk techniques with a modern deconstruction of guitar music. Distinguished by their unique instrumental line-up – two guitars and drums, with no bass – their music is described as 'massive minimalism', where gain, feedback and amplitude are key elements. They draw inspiration from bands such as Swans, Fire! Orchestra, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and composers like H. M. Górecki and Arvo Pärt. They have eight studio albums to their credit, including a collaboration with The Body; their latest release is A Chaos of Flowers, out April 2024 on Thrill Jockey.
