Bazylika św. Floriana
From the north, Matejko Square closes St. Florian's Church, founded in 1185 by Prince Casimir the Righteous and the Bishop of Krakow Gedka in order to house the relics of St. Florian, brought to Krakow from Italy at that time. From the fifteenth century he remained as a university collegiate church under the patronage of the Krakow Academy, whose professors were the parish priests of the temple. Several times rebuilt, especially after the Swedish Deluge (1655-1657), it owes its present shape to Baroque reconstruction carried out in the second half of the 17th century. Inside the church, a particularly noteworthy image of St. Florian the brush of Jan Tricius, the court painter of King Jan III Sobieski, deserves special attention in the gilded altar. In the Chapel of St. Anne – to the right of the entrance – the late Gothic triptych of St. John the Baptist draws attention. In the opposite chapel of St. John the Baptist there is a painting of this saint painted by Tadeusz Kuntze. In this church, in the years 1949-1951, was the vicar of Fr Karol Wojtyla – later Pope John Paul II. He also elevated St. Florian's church to the dignity of a minor basilica.
