Piernikowski

Rapper and producer Robert Piernikowski has consistently stood in the vanguard of Polish rap over more than two decades of activity. He began his career as one half of the Swinoujscie-based duo Napszykłat, which introduced Anticon-style abstraction to the country's scene; despite that group's cult status, he only gained wider recognition in the 2010s as one half of the duo Syny, with whom he introduced dirty dub production to the Polish mainstream and reinterpreted key hip-hop tropes. Piernikowski's work is rooted in an idiosyncratic aesthetic, with hautological references to early Polish capitalism and its many contrasts – from urban decay to new religious movements; he portrays them with a distinctive, ostensibly naïve voice, referencing the stylings of early Polish hip-hop. He made his solo debut in 2012 with the material Się żegnaj; following the success of Syny, he released two albums, No Fun (2017) and The best of moje getto (2019), and the short film Świat jest jak echo. He has collaborated with figures from many different corners of the Polish music scene: from improvisation heavyweights like Adam Golebiewski, Lukasz Rychlicki and BNNT to pop acts Brodka and Coals.
