Gulo Čar

“In the Romani language, gulo čar means ‘sweet grass’ but also ‘sweet bowl’ – this is what we called the cocoa cake my mother used to make when we were children,” says Vladimír Dirda, the leader and bass guitarist of the hot funky sensation from Brno. Music journalist Tomáš S. Polívka adds: “There even might not exist any better description of the music Gulo Čar plays. This mix of funky, pop and Romani harmony smells as lovely and is as soft and full of energy as the childhood memory – and its topping is the fantastic voice of Irena Horváthová.”

The career of Gulo čar includes several essential accomplishments: their second album Baro drom won an Anděl award in the world music category in 2003, their third album Gipsy Goes To Hollywood (2006) was produced by Doug Wimbish from the famous Living Colour, and later that year they played as support to the Godfather of funk, the one and only James Brown. The band is now hard at work on the fourth record that features a broader wind section and accentuated Czech and English in the lyrics.
