Andrzej Boreyko

Andrzej Borejko is a prominent Polish-Russian conductor. After spending several years as Artistic Director of the Poznan Philharmonic – in the city where he spent his first years of his life – he became the first conductor and Artistic Director of the Jenaer Philharmonie. From that moment his world career began. He managed this philharmonic from 1998 to 2003 and holds the title of Honorary Conductor of the ensemble. During this time, as a token of recognition – for the first time in the history of this institution – he was awarded the Deutscher Musikverleger-Verband Prize for innovation and extraordinary qualities of concert programs for 3 consecutive seasons. He later held the position of music director in the orchestras: Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (2001-2006), Hamburger Symphoniker (2004-2008), Berner Sinfonieorchester (2004-2010), Düsseldorfer Symphoniker (2009-2014). At the same time he was the first guest conductor of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (2000-2003), Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR (now SWR Symphonieorchester) and the Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi in San Sebastian (2009-2017). From September 2012 to June 2017 Andrzej Boreyko was the music director of the Orchestre National de Belgique. In September 2014 he was appointed music director of the Naples Philharmonic in Florida.

He is regularly invited to work with outstanding orchestras around the world. In North America he has led the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as symphony orchestras in Cleveland, Philadelphia, Montreal, Detroit, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Toronto. He has performed at festivals in Aspen and Ravinia with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His artistic success and unique approach to concert programming culminated in an invitation to collaborate with the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, as well as with the San Francisco Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and the orchestras of Cincinnati and Houston, where he performs regularly as guest conductor.

Andrzej Boreyko enjoys conducting great works of the symphonic repertoire, but equally often reaches for lesser known compositions. One of the most anticipated musical events of the 2014/15 season in the United States – the first American performance of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's IV Symphony with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under his baton – was met with great acclaim. He also conducted the world premiere of this work with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (April 2014) and the first recording of this composition (Nonesuch Records). He also performed Igor Strawiski's recently discovered work Funeral Song with the Cincinnati orchestra, conducted the premiere of II Symphony written by Victoria Borisova Ollas, as well as Requiem for Larissa by Valentin Silvestrov, and presented Jan Novak's Cantata Dido at the last Prague Spring Festival.
